Well I think there are two really good COM (helmet, headphones, radio interface) systems: the Lynx and the Flycom. I have tried both and chose the Lynx. Why?
Blog Notice: I know this may be an emotional issue but please try to provide non emotional responses.
Yes it is a fact that whatever trike brand or com system we have is the best so everyone take this into consideration. So here is my story of why I switched back to Lynx.
I got my new trike, an S-LSA with an Enigma color screen, an A6 Icon radio (which was soon changed out), and a Flycom COM system. Installed on the aircraft, ready to go. Approved by the manufacturer. Took the Flycom headset out of the bag, put on the helmet to go fly and the cheap plastic jack from the helmet to the com system was broken. HUH. No big deal --but why would someone use a cheap plactic jack when a quality(shielded) metal jack could be used that would cost maybe a 1 USD more? Well OK.
Grabbed the push to talk switch which had a loose back. Well, this is what I would expect from Comtronics. A cheap housing for a push to talk switch. OK.
Both of these plugged into a cheap plastic box that is used for projects at the local electronics store. Cheap stuff.
I put on the Flytcom helmet and what a great feeling overall. It initially went on tight but fit really well. Very comfortable. Now we are headed in the right direction with my new trike and com system. However, I did feel kind of claustrophobic on the helmet at first.
On comes the system and the volumn in the helmet was hard to adjust. It seemed to have a jump about [ch190] the way up which was to loud, and below that was too weak. Could have been the helmet itself but both appeared to do the same.
Overall, the COM between pilots was not as good as the Lynx. Not sure if it was voice activated like the airplanes (which I do not like, or not). It just simply did not sound as good (very subjective statement).
After flying with it about a week I tried to make it work but all the problems drove me crazy (hardware/sound). You cannot just run the engine or taxi around with just the headphones, you have to put on the complete helmet. Helmet hair when not needed.
Not that I or anyone else would EVER do this, but you cannot fly with just the headphones --- WITH YOUR HAIR ON FIRE AND THE STERIO BLASTING. You must have that claustrophobic helmet on creating helmet hair. No just headphones.
After about 10 hours of being frustrated I ripped the Flycom system out and installed the Lynx and I had better quality components and it sounded better. This was a big hassle because as a S-LSA, I had to submit drawings to Apollo, have then approve them, and then add this to the POH. Apollo was very easy to work with for this S-LSA approval.
